A taste of China

As part of their ‘Celebrations’ module in Religious Education children from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 at St Bede’s Pre-Prep School visited Mr Hau’s Chinese restaurant in Eastbourne to learn about Chinese New Year.

The children experienced a variety of Chinese foods/textures which they tried eating using both a knife and fork and then with chopsticks. Mr Hau told the children about the 12 animals in the Chinese calendar; that children receive gifts usually of money in red envelopes at New Year and how Mums clean the houses in readiness for the family get together. The children learnt that red and gold are the predominant Chinese colours and they were fascinated by all the decorations in the restaurant such as a carved Chinese 'blower' dragon made of vegetables, as it is the Year of the Dragon.
