Breakthrough for U14 Hockey
The St Bede's U14 Boys Hockey team won the East Sussex County Tournament held at Eastbourne College on Monday the 25th January.
This is a first for that age group and bodes well for the future of hockey at St Bede's. The team travelled to Eastbourne thinking that they might have a chance, especially since the coaches Petch Pymont-Lennon and Rob Cornell had put so much extra effort in by practicing on Saturday afternoons and break times. They played 5 games on the day and after winning the first and drawing the second they started believing in themselves and played the 3rd game brilliantly to beat the eventual 2nd place team Ardingly 2-0.
Coming into the last game St Bede's had their own fate in their hands as a win against Lewes Old Grammar would give them the title and a loss would hand it to Lewes Old Grammar. St Bede's went into a 1-0 lead early on and held out for a while until a superb goal by Lewes Old Grammar levelled up the game with 5 minutes left (1-1). After a brilliant run down the right by Eoin Bloor the Lewes Old Grammar defenders fouled him to give St Bede's a penalty stroke. This was taken calmly by Dan Goden and converted in the top corner! (2-1). With only 2 minutes left St Bede's kept composed and kept the ball in the opposition’s half until the final whistle.
St Bede's now play Seaford College in the Final of East Sussex vs. West Sussex on Monday the 8th of February; although both teams will be representing Sussex in the EH South Regional Finals on the 11 March 2010.
