Bunbury Cricket Day a great success
The weather was not completely on side but nevertheless, St Bede’s Bunbury Day proved a huge success.
Nearly 200 former students and friends of St Bede’s gathered for the pre match lunch in the marquee and to enjoy the banter of Bunbury founder David English and former England hockey international Roger Dakin, who acted as Master of Ceremonies.
The Bunburys, described by David English as: ‘The world’s number one celebrity cricket team’, launched their 28th season at St Bede’s – one of their favourite venues. Over the years they have raised literally millions of pounds for charity.
After lunch, The Bunbury’s batted first and scored 260 for 7 wickets – former Australian U19 star Steve Crooke blasted 94 not out including some massive 6’s that flew over the marquee and onto the Astro pitch. The other main contributors were former Sussex and England batsman David Smith who made 36 and former Sussex players Adrian Jones, Tony Piggott, and Neil Lenham made appearances.
In reply the former students were never really in the chase once Luke Wells, now with Sussex, was removed for 60. The former students’ team was: Alex Rayner, Dan Sutherland, Ben Woodley, Russell Davies, Will Pavey, James Collins, James Ward, Dan Brown, Luke Wells, Andrew Lait and the inestimable Mr Gough
