Cricket Legend at St Bede's
Sir Garry Sobers, who is widely regarded as the best all-rounder Cricket has ever seen, visited St Bede’s School to invite us to enter a team into his International Schools Competition, to be held on his home island of Barbados in July 2012.
After explaining the details of this wonderful tournament he entertained a packed room with his views of the modern game. He gave very frank answers to the many questions from the audience and emphasised the true spirit of Cricket. It was a pleasure for both the students, and for some of the older staff who remember watching him play at his awesome peak, to hear this outstanding ambassador for his Sport.
One of the Staff writes
Sir Garry Sobers……. You know, the legendary Barbadian batsman who helped himself to six sixes off one over sent down by the hapless Graham Nash of Glamorgan. That’s not what I want to be remembered for, the great man opined on his visit to St Bede’s on June 15th. It’s just not cricket. Teamwork is what the game is all about. It’s that which made Clive Lloyd’s 1980’s West Indies team a power bar none in its day: and it’s money, greed, celebrity and individualism which has brought it to its knees. Oh, and if you win the toss in a limited overs game, always get your opponents to bat first. When it’s your turn to bat, you’ve got a real target to aim for.
Heed the words of the wise JJ ( James Johnson, Captain of the first XI) and may the force be with you.
