Intergrated Studies - Cuckmere River and Newhaven Fort

Year 7 Cuckmere River visit

Over this first half of term Year 7 pupils from St Bede’s Prep School have been learning all about rivers. This has involved studying a river's long profile and how processes and features change along its course. They have found out how v-shaped valleys, waterfalls, meanders, flood-plains and ox-bow lakes form through processes of erosion, transportation and deposition. To enrich what is an interesting topic, the Year 7 pupils visited the River Cuckmere to see some of these processes and features for themselves. This was done over three stages, visiting the upper, middle and lower course over the course of this half-term and good times have been had by all.

Year 5 Newhaven Fort visit

Year 5 pupils from St Bede’s Prep School recently spent an informative day at Newhaven Fort. This was in support of this term’s studies of Twentieth Century History, specifically the World War 2.

The outing gave the children an opportunity to experience a simulation of being in a shelter during an air-raid, and to see various exhibition scenarios of the aftermath of such an attack. They also viewed reconstructions of a typical medical centre and a kitchen of the time, and there was a shop with quizzes about rationing for children. To their delight, they were able to spot some brands such as Kellogg’s Cornflakes and Tate and Lyle golden syrup. A tenuous link with their own lives!

Attention was particularly drawn to the evacuation scene in preparation for an enactment of their own experience in school in the near future which will be followed by a rations meal.
