Latin masters
Elaine Fraser-Gausden, Head of Classics at St Bedes Prep School, now runs two Latin Masterclasses each week for local school children. The pupils in one group began attending in the Summer Term of 2007 when they were still at their junior schools but decided to continue once they had moved to their senior schools this September. The second group all attend Bishop Bell school and have just begun their Classics studies.
"I'm a great believer in the value of studying Latin," says Mrs Fraser-Gausden, "it trains your mind to think logically, it greatly helps your understanding of English grammar and vocabulary, it's a terrific basis for learning other European languages...and, best of all, it's interesting and fun!"
The more experienced group also enjoy studying some Ancient Greek for the last fifteen minutes of the lesson, with its added interest of a completely difference alphabet.
