Legat School

Director of Dance: Elaine Holland

Dance students can join St Bede’s from the age of 11 to follow a two year junior dance programme. This course offers an introduction to the full Legat programme at 12+ and students receive training in classical ballet, tap and national dance together with performance experience.

We like to encourage our students to follow our own very comprehensive two year senior professional course during which they take a minimum of two ‘A’ Levels including A Level Dance which can lead to degree courses in dance and the performing arts. We can also arrange auditions for entry into schools such as The Royal Ballet Upper School, English National Ballet School, Central School of Ballet, the Rambert School, Millenium Dance 2000, London Studio Centre, Laine Theatre Arts and the London Contemporary Dance School, where past students have been accepted.

The Legat School of Dance offers an intensive dance training programme while allowing students to undertake an extensive range of academic studies. The core component of the programme is classical ballet yet at the same time a wide array of contemporary dance styles is provided. Dance studies are incorporated into the academic timetable as well as additional classes occurring in the post academic time period. Varying examination levels of the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus are taught, and students are assisted with entrance for the examinations.

The programme aims to provide a professional level of training to assist students in preparation for entry into vocational ballet and/or dance schools, entrance into Dance Degree and/or Dance Diploma programmes at colleges or universities, and entry at a base level into professional dance companies. Entry into the Legat School of Dance is by audition and interview only. Overseas students may supply a DVD of classwork, and have a telephone interview. Students should be proficient in ballet. It is a rigorous course, demanding a professional level of dedication from the students. Students must be physically fit and in excellent health due to the rigors of the programmes

Legat dancers are assessed each term, and the summer term assessment will help dancers and their family to make career option choices for the following September.
