Maths Day

Back in May we held our first ever ‘Maths Day’. During their maths lessons all the children from Nursery to Year 6 were asked to make or design a Hat that used a mathematical theme and prizes were going to be awarded at the ‘Parade’. A lot of hard work and effort was put into creating such masterpieces, a lot of fun was certainly had and a lot of mess was also made, especially in my classroom.

Later that day the older children were asked to parade their hats in front of our two very well known and distinguished, expert judges Mrs Pinkie Pyemont and Mr Frank Bagnall. Head Boy, Fred Dimbleby also helped to judge the Pre-Prep and Nursery competition earlier in the afternoon. The judges had the extremely difficult and unenviable task of choosing the winners and awarding prizes for the best.

Also during the day, other departments were invited to add a maths element to their normal lessons. The ICT department sorted shapes into a database, the French department played Bingo Lotto and revised the numbers and the Latin department also played Bingo and learnt Roman Numerals. In the EAL department they played a number guessing games, in the Art department they were using the wonderful shapes in numbers to overlay colours to help make Batik designs and the English department did a mathematical word search and looked at connections between mathematical words in the English language. These lessons really helped make the entire Maths Day a lot more special for the children and the Maths Department were so grateful for those staff for entering into the whole spirit of the day.

If it were up to me, everyone should have received a prize. It was decided that the day was a complete success and enjoyed by everybody, so hopefully we may do something similar next year??
