Cricket vs. Headmaster's XI May 2011

Early Sunday morning the weather did not look promising, but fortunately for all the cricketers and guests luck seemed to be on our side as the sun emerged to make it a perfect day for cricket. The two teams were captained by Dr Richard Maloney and Ben Woodley and after an enjoyable lunch the men took the chance to discuss a few team tactics before heading to the crease. The Headmaster’s team were first up and Tim Wainwright and Michael Krause opened the batting. They got off to a great start and everyone seemed to settle into the game. Dr Maloney did have some key players in his team who made a notable impression on the bowling team. Shay Hope, a talented young Barbados student, quickly scored 46 as well as losing a few balls that were hit for 6. Coming in to bat at number 9 was cricket coach Tim van Noort who hit 7 x 6 and 4 x 4 to score an exciting 72 runs. The Old Bedes team had to work hard out in the field and after 30 overs the target set by Dr Maloney’s team was a very impressive 228. The key bowlers were James Ward and Dan Sutherland who took two wickets each. Also making valuable contributions were Sam Bull (46 runs off 8 overs) and Dan Sutherland (23 runs for 5 overs).

The men retired for a well earned tea break and had a chance to soak up the great atmosphere being enjoyed by all the families. After enjoying tea and scones the Old Bedes team took to the field with James Johnson and Ben Woodley up first. The top scorers were Luke Fisher with 32 runs and Will Pavey with 31 runs. Unfortunately the middle order took a bit of a knocking: several batsmen were out for a duck. Dr Maloney’s team all bowled consistently well, but credit must go to Carla Rudd, Lower Sixth student, for her role as wicket keeper. She took five wickets and a number of the former pupils commented on how quick she was to stump them – much to their disappointment. It was great to see young Ben Gough step up to the crease to support the Old Bedes team, scoring a few more runs than some of the former pupils. Tight fielding meant that the Old Bedes team were unable to score enough runs and were out for 180 – leaving the Headmaster victorious.
