Housemasters dinner 18th February 2011

Friday 18th February saw the return of 20 ex-housemasters and their partners to St Bede’s for an evening of good food and entertainment. They were joined by the current housemasters and had the opportunity to meet up with former colleagues whom many had not seen for a number of years.

A warm and welcoming environment was evident in the Salon and Dining room as guest mingled and enjoyed the canapés and drinks on arrival. This was assisted by the roaring fires that lit up the rooms on a cold winters evening.

The evening started with a welcome from Dr Richard Maloney as the guests found their seats at tables named after Housemasters who were unable to attend the dinner.
One of these guests, Cherie Smithyman, is currently based in New Zealand and everyone was delighted when Derek Newton welcomed her through the use of Skype to send a message and wish everyone an enjoyable evening.

One of the many highlights of the evening was when the main course was served and one person from each table had the chance to wear a chef’s hat and apron and carve the delicious roast lamb. This provided much hilarity and gave the other guests the chance to examine the ‘chef’s’ carving skills.

The main meal was followed by an entertaining speech from Roger Perrin who had some interesting stories to share about past housemasters. The final speech of the evening was provided by Lou Belrhiti. She shared happy memories from her time as Dorter Housemistress accompanied by a quiz about the matrons and staff that she has had the pleasure of working alongside.

Towards the end of the evening the opportunity arose to take photos of the houses and have recent staff with housemasters from the early 1980’s. The evening provided a great opportunity to reminisce and share stories and the former housemasters enjoyed visiting the school and seeing the new and exciting developments that are constantly taking place.
