Food
Good Quality, nutritious and tasty food is an essential part of school life for both the morale and health of the children at St Bede’s School and under the leadership of Catering Manager Darren Peirce and his team that is very much the case.
Providing almost 750 meals a day including breakfast, lunch and supper the catering team are well aware of what is required to provide a well balanced menu. With the school day starting at 7.30 am and not finishing until some 12 hours later, the team Darren has working under him, including three chefs and up to 14 full and part time catering assistants, not only provide three meals per day but they also cater for morning biscuit break and the hugely popular afternoon buns break which are all homemade on site in the brand new kitchen and served in the fantastic newly built dining room with stunning sea views.
Wherever possible fresh products are used for all meals and the team take great pride in the fact that all meals are homemade and prepared on the day of service. The dedicated team also provide fresh cakes and sandwiches for regular weekly sporting fixtures.
The team cater for special diets, especially gluten and dairy free diets and with a homemade vegetarian meal available at every meal time the team believe all diets are looked after.
The menu follows a three week cycle, and in a typical week a fully cooked breakfast is offered four times a week with a continental breakfast served on the remaining days, along with a choice of cereals, toast and preserves, and a selection of drinks the boarders have the best possible start to a day.
Lunch will always have two hot choices with one being vegetarian and they are always accompanied by a choice of potato and two fresh vegetables. A delicious sweet pudding is served daily and with a fresh and varied choice of salads also available the children are well looked after to see them through the day.
The evening meal is normally a themed supper and some examples of this are Chinese, French and Spanish. These suppers have proved to be very popular and successful with the boarders and new themes and ideas are created regularly, with the children having huge input into what themed meal they would like.
The school has regular food council meetings which Darren attends along with a pupil from each year group. These meetings are the base of ideas for the menu throughout the term.
