Primary schools science challange
Last week pupils at St Bede's Prep School, lit up their Bunsen burners, put on their white coats, and hit the science labs to take part in Science Week 2009.
For the whole week the students were busy in a variety of scientific activities, including the Primary Schools Challenge that was hosted at St Bede's. The Primary Schools Challenge involved three teams of four pupils from, Ocklynge, Willingdon and St John's primary schools.
Each team was assisted by a St Bede's pupil from years 7 or 8. The competition involved a series of three different challenges in which the teams were required to work together to solve a problem within 25 minutes. Each challenge concentrated on a specific area of science - biology, chemistry and physics.
From the making of spaghetti bridges and paper helicopters, to pupils putting themselves in the place of aliens and trying to work out the type of chemicals found in test tubes they had brought from out of space. The highlight of the challenge though was when one of the St Bede's prep school Science teachers Mr Childers demonstrated to the pupils the flaming wax experiment! The pupils all enjoyed a day full of fun and learning.
