Private Peaceful performed by the Drama Masterclass
Simon Reade’s adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful is a strong and moving piece of theatre, a considerable challenge for such young actors, but they rose to that challenge with real commitment and enthusiasm, giving up many evenings to rehearse, enjoying the project and each other’s company.
The play tells the story of two brothers from a Dorset farming community at the beginning of the 20th century and gives the audience an authentic picture of rural life at the time. When both brothers fall in love with the same girl and then enlist in the army, when the First World War breaks out, the limits of their relationship are stretched to the point of Charlie’s final and awful sacrifice. In his novel, Michael Morpurgo takes up the cause of those soldiers shot for cowardice, who were in fact just doing what they believed to be right. Their case is brought poignantly to life in this brilliant play.
The actors of the Drama Masterclass achieved an outstanding performance and were much admired; everyone played an important part in that success. They were a commendable team, very expertly supported by Mr Meier’s brilliant lighting, especially in the final scene, and Mr Barclay’s wonderful back projections and sound effects, which enhanced the performance greatly.
Well done everyone.
