Applying for a Sixth Form Scholarship

For students already at St Bede’s Senior School

Students may apply for a Sixth Form Scholarship in the autumn term of Year 11.

To be considered, your child must have demonstrated real excellence either:

• academically,
• in one of the creative arts (Drama; Art; Dance; Music),
• or in sport.

For example:

• an Academic candidate must be predicted at least 5 A* grades at GCSE.
• a candidate in the Creative Arts must be performing at a level significantly beyond others of his or her age– i.e. Grade VII or above for Music.
• a Sports candidate should be performing at county standard or equivalent

How to apply

Please complete the ‘Sixth Form Scholarship Application for Current Students’ along with our ‘Statement of Financial Circumstances Form’.

These must be returned to our Director of Admissions by Monday 14th December.

Please note: The financial value of a scholarship now depends on means-testing. If parents are seeking any financial relief in addition to the scholarship award, the St Bede’s School Trust requires the completion of a ‘Statement of Financial Circumstances Form’ which should be attached to the scholarship application.

We recognise that some parents do not require a financial award; the prestige of being awarded a scholarship is reward enough in itself. If you happen to be so placed, and able to help us release more funds into means tested awards, please could you indicate this in your scholarship application.

What happens next?

We will invite all those students who meet our criteria – i.e. who have demonstrated real excellence in one or more of the above areas – to an assessment day in the Spring term.

During the day, every candidate will sit a general paper.

• Academic candidates will also choose either an English paper or a Maths paper, and those who wish to may also take a Science paper. They will then be asked to give a five minute presentation on a subject of their choice to a panel of staff members.

• Art and Design candidates will do a practical test, which will take the form of an extended still-life drawing. They will also be required to present a full portfolio, showing the range of their interest and evidence of research and preparatory pieces.

• Dance candidates will be asked to do an audition, which will consist of a ballet class and a contemporary dance class. Candidates are invited to perform a short solo of their choice in any dance discipline which they feel shows their particular ability.

• Drama candidates will be asked to perform two contrasting pieces of contemporary theatre for audition (each piece two minutes in duration.) Attention will be given to evidence of the candidates’ achievements in Drama so far – e.g. performances at school or within the community.

• Sports candidates will undertake a series of trials. (Candidates should also include references from their coaches along with their application.)

Final reminder: If your child already holds a scholarship, you do not need to reapply. The current scholarship will remain in place for as long as your child continues to perform at the level we would expect. If, however, your child wishes to change the nature of that scholarship, for example from an art scholarship to an academic scholarship, then you do indeed need to reapply at this point.
