Sport plays an important part in the life of the school, but we recognise that students have a wide range of aptitudes and abilities. No one sport is compulsory, but students must engage in physical activity on at least one afternoon each week.

All sports can be played competitively or non-competitively, with expert coaching always at hand. Students can choose to play to the level of their ability, with some playing simply as a pastime and others reaching County, Regional or National level.

We encourage all our young people to develop their physical fitness, offering specialised coaching and a full-time fitness coach and swimming trainer. For individuals for whom sport is a passion, we make it easy for them to excel, building flexibility into the academic programme to allow for training.

Our location lends itself to sport. Facilities include an indoor sports centre that can accommodate 12 badminton courts or two basketball courts as well as being used for a variety of other sports, squash courts, fitness studio and competition-sized indoor pool, as well as floodlit astro-turf, riding stables and a practice golf course.

Participation in all sports is open to both girls and boys while professional coaches offer regular coaching clinics in all sports. There is a full range of inter-school fixtures at all age levels and mixed staff/student teams also play in local leagues.

Our competitive sports clubs include cricket, tennis, hockey, football, rugby, netball, rounders, swimming, cross-country running, athletics, squash, basketball and golf.

Sport at St Bede's School is an important part of the balance that the school strives to achieve in its approach to extracurricular activities. There is a long and proud tradition of excellence in sport, but importantly we aim to cater for the competence level of each individual student, and to provide them with the competition and coaching that is going to ensure that they grow in confidence and enjoy the sport at the level at which they are competing.

Aberdare and Glanvill Cup National Finals at Queenswood School, Hertfordshire (4th-9th July)

The St.Bede's U19 Boys Tennis Team had a tremendous result reaching the semi-finals in the National School Finals where the top 16 schools in the country compete in the week long tournament. This is following many qualifying matches commencing in April and around 3,000 school entering at the initial stages. In the quarter-finals they beat the number 3 seeds from the North-East, Rivington & Blackrod;the team that knocked us out at the quarter-final stage last year. This was another tense affair and after going down 3-1 the boys fought back and responded well to coach Julie Salmon who was determined that these boys were not to go out of this competition without digging deeper and finding a way to turn this match around. There were some superb performances and incredibly high level of tennis to tie the match at 3-3 before Valentin Clements and Julian Cash won a nail biting tie break shoot out to reach the semi-finals.This was the first time that any of the team had reached this far in the National Event and pleasing to see how elated the were at this comeback and a semi-final the following day.We were then beaten by the favourites and eventual champions Reed's School. A really pleasing week for a team the has been committed all year and driven to succeed in this in this fabulous tournament. St.Bede's is now ranked 4th in Great Britain. Team:Sam Chamberlain, Valentin Clements, Julian Cash, Elliot Moyle and Harrison Seward
