BTEC COURSE

BTEC Level 3 National Subsidiary Diploma; and Diploma in Music Performance

˜ The course is designed to equip students for employment as performers in the music industry.

˜ It also serves as a foundation course for students who want to go on and study a music degree.

˜ Both Diploma and Subsidiary Diploma are 100% assessed on coursework (portfolio and practical).

(i) The Level 3 National Subsidiary Diploma comprises of 6 units of study, and is equivalent to one A level with a maximum of 120 UCAS points attainable.

(ii) The Level 3 National Diploma comprises of 12 units of study and is equivalent to two A levels with a maximum of 240 UCAS points attainable.

The units are selected to suit the intake for that year group and in discussion with the students. Some of the units currently being studied are:

  • The Sound and Music Industry
  • Music Performance Techniques
  • Planning a Music Project
  • Improvisation
  • Working and Developing as a Musical Ensemble
  • Aural Perception Skills


The performance opportunities are many and varied, both in and out of school, with particular emphasis placed on students organising the concerts independently. The culmination of this two year programme is the BTec concert night. The students arrange everything, from contracts, publicity and the sound and lighting crew, to the style of music their band plays. The profit made is then donated to a charity of the students' choice. Click here for details

The course is delivered by experienced professional musicians and teachers. The staff continue to be active in the music industry, both recording and performing concerts and shows.
