Top Girls
Top Girls follows the story of high flying business woman Marlene, in her climb to the top. Set in the early Eighties, Top Girls captures the sense of drive and urgency of the time. It shows both extremes of British society, Marlene at the top and her family left behind on the bottom rung of the class system. Caryl Churchill depicts the desperation of both classes and shows that even when you feel you have everything, there is still a sense of regret and loss.
With Top Girls collecting various awards for its boldness and originality, Churchill proved to be one of the most influential writers of the Eighties’s. The play has been highly praised for its intriguing historical act, where Churchill features significant women from history. Set in Marlene’s dream, this act sums up the essence of the play and the 1980’s.
‘We’ve all come a long way. To our courage and the way we changed our lives and our extra ordinary achievements.’
The same could be said for our seven cast members, Rebecca Wilkinson, Sarah May, Hannah Savignon-Smythe, Nikita Leys, Lola Jeffries, Jodi Hughes and Lisa Wilkie, from the UVIth Performing Arts Set, who between them played 16 different roles in the play. This wonderful production was directed by Sarah Cakebread.
