Sporting heroes

St Bede’s Senior School held its annual Sports Awards dinner on April 24th and it really showcased a remarkable year of success for sport at the school.

The U15s cricket, hockey, tennis and netball teams all received recognition for their Sussex victories and junior honours were awarded to Jamie Claire who is Sussex Champion and represents England at U16 golf, James Emblin who represents England at Taekwando and who this week won bronze at the European Championships, Yolanda King who has a national ranking for table tennis, Mollie Milton who is part of the Team GB Karate, Sophie Rudge who plays U15 football for ISFAG and Louis Simmons who rides in the junior GB team.

At senior level honours went to Rob Buchanan who plays U18 England rugby, Alex Harlow who represents Guernsey at Fencing, James Norwood who plays in the England Schoolboys’ side, Michael Oluwatosin who plays in the Independent Schools’ national side and Luke Wells who represents both Sussex and England at Cricket.

Recognition went to the U19 Netballers who are the new holders of the Sussex Cup, the U18 Boys Hockey team who have just won the Sussex Cup, the U18 Rugby 7’s who successfully defended the Sussex Cup which they won last year and the U18 Boys Footballers who in March won the Nationals from an original field of 2,400 schools and who, on 27th April, rounded off a superb season by winning the Sussex Cup, beating Lancing in the final.

The Cole Cup and Janet Cole cup are awarded to a male and female student who has shown dedication and commitment throughout their time at St Bede’s. This year The Cole Cup went to Dan Gorringe who has played 1st team Cricket, Hockey and Football for St Bede’s. The Janet Cole Cup was awarded to Becky Woods who has represented the School in Cross Country championships and Athletics, but who is also a superb netball and hockey player and a key player in the team that won the Sussex Netball Cup.

Engraved tankards were presented were presented to England representatives Rob Buchanan (Rugby), Luke Wells (Cricket) and James Norwood (Football) in recognition of their achievements and James was also awarded Sportsman of the Year. As he was representing England in a match that night his award was collected by his Mum.

Lauren Allymohamed who is a true all-rounder was awarded Sportswoman of the Year. View summary round up.
