Triple England call for St Bede's boys
For the first time in its 30 year old history, St Bede’s Senior School currently has England representatives in Cricket, Football and Rugby – an extraordinary achievement.
Rob Buchanan, who is Head of School, has been representing England for the last two years and this Easter will be playing in the Six Nations tournament and in a match against Japan. A prop, Rob has already represented England in five matches and 10 training games. When he leaves school this summer Rob will be taking up a two year contract with the Harlequins. He has been a member of their junior academy since being selected for the England U16s.
James Norwood was selected for the national Independent Schools Association side nearly two years ago and received his all-England call in January. A striker, James will, over the next six weeks represent England in internationals against Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. James has trials with Brighton and Birmingham in the offing.
Luke Wells is Deputy Head of School and won his first England cap playing in a one-day U17s match against New Zealand U19s in the summer. Luke batted at number four and knocked up a respectable 40 runs. His England call came after being named Player of the Tournament at the England Schools Cricket Festival. He has now been selected for the U19 England squad and has just returned from Malaysia where the squad was in training for the U19 World Cup which will be played in Kenya in 2010. Luke is hoping to take up a place at Loughborough in September to read History and Geography.
Headmaster Steve Cole said: ‘The individual achievements of these boys are outstanding and it is exciting for St Bede’s to have England representatives in these three major sports, all at the same time. What is particularly special is that all three boys also attended the Prep School and have each spent at least seven years as members of the St Bede’s School Trust. I shall certainly be watching their progress over the years, and I am sure many others will be as well.'
