Year 2 Gifted and Talented day at St Bede's

Squeals of excitement filled the drama studio at the Prep School when seventy-five Year 2 children from various different primary schools in East Sussex joined us for a Gifted and Talented Day. The day had proved to be so popular that it was spread out over two days!

Once the children had all arrived they were split into groups and then sent off to their first activity. ‘Kitchen Chemistry’ proved to be a huge success when Mr Childers showed the children how various everyday items in the kitchen can act together to produce anything from bangs to flames! The science activity was of course then finished off with the Year 2 children meeting Mr Childers’ resident pet snakes!

Activity two was an exciting brew of creative writing with Mrs Adams. The children started the activity in the outdoor classroom where Mrs Adams encouraged them to close their eyes, and take in the smells and sounds around them and think about how things felt when they touched them. Waiting for them back in the classroom Mrs Edgell dished out some different foods for the children to taste and then describe to Mrs Adams. Disgusting to delicious and crackling were words that could be heard to describe what was now revealed to be salt, sugar and popping candy!

Robots was next on the agenda, the groups were split into two teams and under the guidance of Mr Meier and Mr Rashed each team had to race against the clock to build a robot car with an engine that would survive the jump ramp!

Last but by no means least the children’s musical talents were unleashed as Mr Hughes and Mrs Stevens gave an engaging and fun ukulele lesson. By the end of the lesson all the children were able to play and sing along to ‘London Bridge is falling down’!
