Year 5 Evacuee Lunch
In support of their IS studies of WWII, Year 5 pupils from St Bede’s Prep School recently enacted an evacuation. The night before, the children were asked to pack their school bags with a few essential and sentimental items for an indefinite period away from home.
To the sound of an air raid siren they were evacuated carrying their bag, gas mask, ‘rations’, including packed-tea and wearing labels.
After an imaginary but realistic train journey they arrived at a ‘school hall’ out in the countryside or at the seaside to partake of a final ‘rations’ meal together before being collected by their foster families.
As always our ‘history enthusiast’ chef prepared an authentic meal based on genuine war recipes which included corned beef hash rissoles, root vegetables, boiled potatoes, jam-roly-poly and a cup of tea – The children loved it!
