Legat School
Nicolai Legat was born in Russia and was initially trained by his Father. After leaving his home country, Legat set up a dance school in Kensington where famous dancers trained in his studio. After his death his young wife continued his legacy, moving the school to different locations before finally settling at Mark Cross. It was from there that Legat moved first to Wadhurst College in 1989 and then in 2000 to its current location at St Bede’s.
Dance students can join St Bede’s from the age of 11 to follow a two year junior dance programme. This course offers an introduction to the full Legat programme at 12+ and students receive training in classical ballet, tap and national dance together with performance experience.
The basis of all our dance training is classical ballet. The training integrates established traditions with modern artistic development and the best of new teaching methods. Classical ballet is the essence of the course with, in addition, a strong emphasis on contemporary dance. Legat students enjoy the privilege of highly acclaimed guest teachers and choreographers. The Legat professional dance course offers student full time training in:
- Classical Ballet
- Contemporary Dance
- Choreography
- Jazz
- Tap
We like to encourage our students to follow our own very comprehensive 2 year senior professional course during which they take a minimum of 2 ‘A’ Levels including A Level Dance which can lead to degree courses in dance and the performing arts. We can also arrange auditions for entry into schools such as The Royal Ballet Upper School, English National Ballet School, Central School of Ballet, the Rambert School, Millenium Dance 2000, London Studio Centre, Laine Theatre Arts and the London Contemporary Dance School, where past students have been accepted.
The Legat programme has been designed to prepare promising young dancers for the rigours of the professional dance world. The programme places great emphasis on creating alert and aware dancers, who are well educated and technically advanced.
Students who graduate through the Legat programme enjoy and benefit from an enriching education. The Legat programme not only prepares its students for the world of dance but also for the worlds of life and work.
Performances are an essential part of the Dance course. All Legat students take part in studio performances of work in progress as well as the main Annual Legat Performance, which includes classical ballet, contemporary dance, jazz and tap. An annual choreographic competition gives students the opportunity to experiment with their own choreography and the rich variety of music and drama activities at St Bede’s offers additional performance experience.
