Year 4's production of Little Moose
19 March 2008
The drum-beating of Native American Indians and their ceremonial dancing could be heard and witnessed at St Bede’s Prep School. It was, in fact, Year 4 presenting their play, Little Moose, by Margaret Rolf. The story was of an Indian Brave called Little Moose who sought a solution to a problem between his father, Chief Yellowstraw and his best friend’s father, Chief Blackfoot.
Chief Blackfoot had the power of fire and fully intended to keep it as a secret, but when his corn crop was ruined by rain he agreed to swap his secret in exchange for Chief Yellowstraw’s corn. However, his selfishness got the better of him and he failed to deliver fire as promised. It was only after the intervention of Little Moose and his own son, Yahtoo, with a clever kidnap plan, that Chief Blackfoot eventually agreed to part with the coveted fire.
There were two alternating casts, one each from Class 4F and 4P giving every one the opportunity to have a speaking part though there was plenty of involvement throughout including artwork, making dreamcatchers, peg dollies, totem poles and tepees.
Everyone looked splendid in their costumes and feathers and none more so than Chief Whitewolf, who, as Narrator, told the story beautifully. The final surprise was to discover that Chief Whitewolf was in fact, Little Moose as an adult. He had indeed grown into the Chief’s feathers!
