A very Victorian sports day
23 September 2008
Children from St Bede's Prep School and St John's Primary School in Meads will be staging a Victorian Sports Day and Football Match as part of the Eastbourne Victorian Festival which is running from 27 September to 5 October 2008 with a variety of events to mark the occasion.
At 11.00am, on Wednesday 1 October, the haunting sound of a barrel organ will mark the start of a Victorian Sports Day and Football Match. The Year 5 pupils at St Bede's are participating in the Sports Day, at the Western Lawns, opposite the Grand Hotel. Dressed in traditional Victorian costume, the girls and boys - along with children from St John's will compete in various Victorian sports day events including egg and spoon race, sack race and the flat race. There is even a 3-legged race for any spectators brave enough to take part! Prizes will be awarded at the end of the event to those who have been ‘victorious'!
But the excitement doesn't stop there: at 2.00pm there is a Victorian football match between St Bede's and St John's U10 teams. In a game fit to thrill the Queen and Prince Regent themselves, the children will vie for a trophy which will be presented by Mr Jonathan Webley, the manager of the Grand Hotel.
All visitors are most welcome and we hope that a hearty crowd arrives to cheer on the participants.
