A taste of Victorian times at St Bede's
02 October 2008
To the sounds of a barrel organ, the young mistresses and masters of Year 5, at St Bede’s, assembled on the Western Lawns, Eastbourne, to participate in one of the events organised for this year’s Eastbourne Victorian Festival. In glorious sunshine the children were whisked away to a faraway time to play authentic Victorian games such as the egg and spoon race, sack race and hoop race. The children all enjoyed the morning‘s activities – although they were a little nervous of their stern Victorian teachers waiting in the wings, canes in hand. Much to the children’s delight, Mr Nicholas Bevington, Headmaster of St Bede’s, loosened his cravat and frock coat, dispensed with the cane and took part in the grown-up, three legged race.
In the afternoon, the boys’ U10 football team played St John’s Meads in a Victorian Football Match and played splendidly although ultimately St John’s won 3 - 0. The day was a real success and everyone agreed a memorable time was had by all.
