Literary extravaganza at St Bede's
16 October 2008
If you had walked along the corridors of St Bede's Prep School last week, you would have rubbed shoulders with Harry Potter, Smee, Huckleberry Finn, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee and an Intergalactic Space Ranger - along with many other literary characters - while the whole school celebrated Book Week.
For the whole week, everyone in the school had the opportunity to participate in a literary extravaganza that celebrated the magic of reading, under the theme of ‘Journeys'. Helen Nedar, an accomplished writer, visited Pre-Prep and worked with the children on Space Travel story-writing. Roy Apps, a popular children's author of over 50 books, worked with Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 on ‘Sensory Walk' Writing, while Chrissie Harmer-Brown (an editor from the TVs series Casualty) held writing workshops for Years 7 and 8 on character development and script writing.
There were also treasure hunts, book character fashion shows and a number of challenging competitions in the Library. The highlight of the week was the ‘Book-a-Holiday' Competition, where children had to gradually gather answers from daily clues to work out the favourite holiday destination of Mrs Brundle, the Head of English. In case you are wondering, it is the Seychelles! The two lucky winners were Hannah Falcone and Gabriella Steel, both from Year 7, who will both be able to journey to Waterstone's Bookshop in a limousine where they will each be able to spend £40 on their favourite books.
