Dance
Contemporary and modern dance is taught to the boys and girls from the Nursery to Year 6 as part of the curriculum. Workshops take place throughout the year for all age groups in African, Asian and Hip-Hop dance. Flamenco dancing classes are held on Tuesday evenings in the Dance Studio, for both children and adults.
Ballet, tap and modern dance are taught in the school’s Dance Studio on Wednesdays and Thursdays by professional dance teachers. Pupils of any age may enrol in these classes. Adult classes in ballet and jazz are held on Wednesday evenings. Annual shows are performed and the children also take ISTD grade exams.
Particularly talented dancers are able to join the Legat School of Dance at the Senior School from the age of 11. Scholarships are available and details can be obtained from the Senior School. The pupils attend the Legat School on two afternoons per week and are taken to the Senior School by minibus.
On September 21st, a professional dancer from Wise Moves Dance Company worked with 30 children from Year 6 as part of a Day of Dance for Eastbourne Schools, culminating in an evening performance by all the schools, with the dance company, at a local theatre.
Year 5 attended the Legat Ballet School’s Summer Show at the Senior School. Dancers from the Prep school took part in “Peter and the Wolf”, which was much enjoyed.
Dance is well represented in our annual Arts Festival and includes two Days of Dance by our own dancers, Wise Moves in performance and a show by a dance group from the University of Brighton. This year’s festival will also include a choreography competition.
