Sean's Olympic swimming selection success
14 March 2008
St Bede’s Senior School swim scholar, Sean Kayes, has been selected to represent his home country, Malawi at the Beijing Olympics this year.Sean, whose parents are farmers in Malawi, joined the School in September last year on a swimming scholarship and has been training under St Bede’s coach Kevin Ayers. Since he joined the School, Sean’s times have improved incredibly. He knows that he will be swimming the 50m Freestyle event and a decision will be made for other events, based on his times, in July.
Sean, who will celebrate his 17th birthday just a month before the games start, is studying Geography, Maths and PE at A level. His swim training programme begins at 5am most mornings and usually involves evening sessions as well.
Says Sean: ‘Mr Ayers is the most amazing coach and my swimming has improved so much since I joined St Bede’s, he has really helped me to build my times. But never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be selected for the Olympics this year’.
