Sussex debut for Luke Wells
22 April 2008
Following in his dad’s footsteps, 17-year-old Luke Wells made his Sussex debut recently when the 2nd XI played Hampshire. Luke, who is captain of St Bede’s 1st XI played alongside ex St Bede’s student Ollie Rayner, in a team captained by James Kirtley. The final score was a draw.
Kirtley, who saw Wells play in the inaugural Arabian Challenges Schools Cricket Series in Abu Dhabi during the Easter holidays, singled out Wells in the Daily Telegraph last week as an emerging talent. He was quoted as saying: ‘His batting performances were outstanding – one knock of 178 – and he offered plenty of evidence that he has a very bright future in the game’.
Luke has been a member of the Sussex County Squad since the age of 10 and is now in the Sussex Academy. A batsman and off-spinner, he represented the Academy in Australia at Christmas.
Dad is of course ex England and former Sussex captain, Alan Wells, who is Director of Cricket at St Bede’s Senior School. Both father and son will be playing in the Headmaster’s XI against the Lashings World XI when Lashings visits St Bede’s on 27th June.
Anyone interested in booking a table of 10 for the lunch before the match should contact Marion Kemp on 01323-443812. Tickets for the game, which begins at 2.30pm, can be bought at the gate on the day.
