The start of a glorious week of cricket
13 May 2008
Glorious sunshine blessed St Bede’s fourth annual Cricket Festival this week. The Festival got off to a brilliant start last Saturday with the 2nd XI and U15Bs having comfortable wins against Worth at home and the 1st XI, U15As, U14As and U14Bs all winning away at Worth. The U15As had the most exciting match, chasing 175 for victory and at one stage reduced to 90 for 8. They were saved by T J Key scoring 73 and Alex Brent knocking up 33 not out, giving the St Bede’s side a one wicket victory.
Sunday saw a Former Students XI challenging and Invitation XI with 160 played 130 in favour of the Former Students in a 20-20 match. St Bede’s Prep School parent Mike Tingley was the top scorer for the Invitation side, knocking up 54.
Another brilliant day on Monday saw St Bede’s 1st XI run out the winners in their annual match against the MCC XI. The visitors batted first on a wonderful pitch but some tight bowling saw them struggling to 104. A decent partnership between Finch and Campbell helped the MCC towards a modest total of 206.
Outstanding bowling by St Bede’s Luke Fisher and Luke Wells insured that the MCC were fielding long before tea.
After a shaky start to their innings, losing three early wickets, the St Bede’s boys romped to victory with Sussex U16 star, James Johnson, top scoring with a very mature 74 not out. This completed a hat-trick of St Bede’s victories over the MCC.
On Tuesday St Bede’s 2nd played The Forty Club.
