Trophy number two for U15 cricketers
30 June 2008
In another exciting match St Bede’s U15 cricketers won their second trophy of the season in the final of the Blackshaw Bowl 20/20 against Hurstpierpoint College. They added to their county 20/20 triumph against Brighton College to make it two in a row in a match that went down to the wire.Hurstpierpoint won the toss and elected to bat on a good wicket. St Bede’s opening bowler George Winstone got amongst the wickets early, leaving Hurstpierpoint struggling at 31 for 4. However, some good middle and lower order partnerships eventually allowed Hurstpierpoint to reach a competitive 126 all out, Michael Tutt taking the final two wickets.
Led by their opening batsmen and Captain, Fabio Sgarbini, St Bede’s got off to a quick start but then proceeded to lose wickets at regular intervals. By the 15th over Hurstpierpoint bowlers Campbell and Haque had accounted for 5 St Bede’s wickets leaving the match delicately poised at 89 for 7. However, for the second final in a row Matt Davies led his team home with a superb 29 not out. He was supported by newcomer to the side Tom Glenn, finishing with 14 not out. Between them they ensured they reached the Hurstpierpoint total with two overs to spare.
The U15 side are now hoping to make it an unprecedented three in a row, when they play in the longer version of the County Cup semi-final later this week.
