Lashings World XI Match Report
01 July 2008
On a slightly overcast day, but on a brilliant wicket The Lashings World XI faced the might of St Bede's Headmaster's XI.
In a crowd pleasing moment, the world's greatest batsman, Sachin Tendulkar opened the batting with fellow Indian Test star Dinesh Mongia. Dinesh took the first ball from Sussex U16 bowler Matt Cooke.
Despite some good deliveries from the Headmaster's XI bowlers, Tendulkar and Mongia put on a 131 runs for the first wicket. Mongia was bowled by Ryan King for 72, to be replaced by the Lashings captain, Ritchie Richardson. However, the former West Indian captain was dismissed cheaply for 11, caught King, bowled Jordan Turner.
Tendulkar continued to accumulate runs, proving his ranking as world number one. But in a moment that will live with him forever, 17-year-old Luke Fisher caught and bowled the great man, for 98, denying him his century on the St Bede's wicket.
Lashings World XI finished their innings 239 for five off 30 overs.
After tea it was the youngsters' turn to bat needing a tough eight runs per over if they were to win the game.
A valiant 72 from skipper and Sussex young cricketer Luke Wells, who had good support from Dan Gorringe knocking up a respectable 37, St Bede's finished their innings with 159 for six - not close enough to the Lashings total.
Luke Wells won Man of the Match for his 72 runs and bowling of 2 for 48.
All in all it was a wonderful day with nearly 300 guests enjoying a pre-Match lunch in St Bede's new sports hall and another 700 turning up to watch the match.
Many thanks to all those who supported the event, particularly St Bede's main sponsors, Buy Overseas Property Ltd, Westridge and Infacom.
