Eton tradition
16 September 2008
Tradition has it that the first Saturday of the new academic year sees St Bede’s Senior School send a host of football teams to Eton College. This year was no exception, with 10 teams travelling up from Sussex to Windsor and the visitors returning victorious, winning eight games and drawing one.The St Bede’s 1st Xl came up against difficult opponents at Eton and after a cagy first half, in which both sides had chances to take a lead, the game was goalless at half time.
St Bede’s came out for the second half with more fire in their bellies and stepped up their game to the level that they have been showing in pre season training. This resulted in them taking the lead through a Michael Brown header, his first goal for the first team. St Bede’s pushed on from there and dominated the middle period of the second half and strengthened their footing in the game with a second goal - an own goal from an Eton defender after good work from Ollie Davies.
Eton quickly rallied and were quickly back in the game with two goals to even the game up going into the last ten minutes.
St Bede’s thought they had taken a lead when Davies headed in from Josh Davey’s fine cross, only for the linesman to rule it offside! Refusing to be beaten the St Bede’s team galvanised and won the game in the last two minutes with a towering back post header from Dan Gorringe.
Hopefully the boys can take many positives form this performance into their first leaguer game away at Charterhouse this Saturday
