Early golds for St Bede's swimmers
04 November 2008
The St Bede’s Senior Squad headed to Aldershot for the South East Regional Championships and what a weekend it proved to be. Only two age groupings were contested (girls14/15 & 16+, boys 15/16 & 17+) and the competition was always going to be strong at this level.
Stephanie Ketley (aged 15) and Harriet Lambourne (15) were on fantastic form taking 5 National Qualifying Times (NQT) between them which was a superb achievement at this early stage of the season. Ketley took Gold and the Junior Championship for the 200m Freestyle in a NQT time of 2.09.20, Silver in the 100m Freestyle (NQT in 1.00.71) and Bronze in the 200m Backstroke (NQT in 2.25.09).
Lambourne took Gold and both the Junior and Open Championship for all three butterfly events of 50m (29.87), 100m (NQT 1.05.10) and 200m (NQT 2.22.97). Mary Carless swam from the front of her heat to take a personal best time of 4.51.04 and a well deserved 7th place in the 400m Freestyle.
Michael Faber (16) managed to get in on the act for the boys taking a NQT and the gold medal and Junior Championship for the 50m Freestyle in a time of 25.18. Faber also took silver in the 200m IM (2.18.18), bronze in the 200m Freestyle (2.01.34) and 100m Breaststroke (1.13.17).
Tom Lamb (16) took two brilliant silver medals in the 400m IM (4.59.08) and the 200m Breaststroke (2.53.16).
Anthony White won bronze in the 200m IM in a time of 2.19.14.
The boys then combined their talents along with Nick Ayers to take the bronze medal in the 4 x 100m medley relay.
Head Coach Kevin Ayers was delighted with the weekend’s results, commenting, “it was a great performance from the whole team. Stephanie Ketley in particular showed real determination and came through a heavy race schedule very well indeed.”
