Sussex Country Cricket U17 Player of the Year award for Luke Wells
10 November 2008
On Friday night Sussex County Cricket Club held their youth cricket presentation evening at Hove Town Hall. Talented cricketers ranging from U10s up to U17s, as well as members of the Academy were present. Presentations were made by Sussex Captain Chris Adams and 1st team Coach Mark Robinson. Other Sussex players including James Kirtley and Carl Hopkinson were there to cheer on the youngsters.
St Bede's student Luke Wells was presented with the U17 Player of the Year Award and also collected the most prestigious youth award when he was presented with the Academy Player of the Year.
Luke had an outstanding summer with Sussex and St Bede's, and also represented England U17s when they played against New Zealand U19s. Selection for England came following the player of the tournament award he won during the England Schools Regional Competition, held at Loughborough University. He has just returned from a two week training camp with England U18s that was held in Shrewsbury.
As well as being a member of Sussex Country Cricket Club Academy, Luke is also part of the St Bede's Cricket Academy which provides individual cricket coaching built around a student's timetable. The Academy, run by Luke's father, former Sussex captain Alan Wells, looks to maximise the potential of students for whom cricket is an integral part of their lives. It gives those with ability who look towards becoming professional cricketers an extra edge and to this end Alan works closely with County coaches.
In the meantime Luke is keeping his options open by applying to read History at Oxford.
