
Academic Manager

Senior Academic Manager and Centre Director
Qualifications:
As well as having an initial EFL qualification (CELTA or Trinity TESOL or equivalent), applicants must have a DELTA or Trinity College LTCL Diploma in TESOL. In addition, we require that the Academic Manager has extensive teaching experience in a wide range of contexts. We particularly welcome applicants with previous teacher training experience and/or experience of being a DOS or ADOS.

Working Day:
The Academic Manager has overall responsibility for the smooth running of the EFL Programme. The first duty of the morning is leading the daily Teachers’ Meeting. This is an opportunity to pass on information, share ideas and activities and twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays it is an input session where you will present ideas to teachers and give them advice on some of the challenges of teaching young learners.
Following the meeting it is the responsibility of the Academic Manager in conjunction with the Senior Teacher to ensure that all students are in their appropriate classes and that the teachers are not in need of anything.
During the morning whilst the teachers are teaching, you will be making sure that paperwork is up-to-date, that class lists are accurate and this is also the time when observations are conducted. On Monday mornings, you will be involved in the testing of students. You will with the Senior Teacher divide the students into testing groups, allocating them a classroom and a teacher. After testing is completed, you will supervise the marking of the tests and be available to guide teachers on marking students’ writing. Once the testing and marking is complete, together with the Senior Teacher, you will allocate students into classes based on their level, age and nationality.
During the afternoons is when you will have most input as this is the time when the teachers prepare for the following day. You will be expected to guide and support teachers during preparatio time ensuring that they are following the syllabus, maintaining the high standards of the course an preparing well-balanced lessons. You will be expected to pay particular attention to newly qualified and inexperienced teachers as they will probably need the most guidance and support.
You will have to ensure that all of the necessary paperwork – Leavers’ Certificates, Leavers’ Reports and Weekly Progress Reports are completed in the appropriate time and this will involve close cooperation with the teachers.
Main Duties:
- Full responsibility for the smooth running of the EFL programme at the centre, ensuring that the high standards expected at St Bede’s are being met
- Working closely with other members of the Senior Team
- Building and motivating a positive team of teachers and managing them in a professional way
- Observing all teachers’ lessons at least twice during the course and providing them with timely, constructive feedback
- Ensuring that teachers are following the syllabus and using appropriate materials for the level and age of the students
- Supporting all teachers, but especially newly qualified or inexperienced ones during the allocated lesson preparation slots
- Organising and carrying out student placement testing and end of course report writing
- Allocating students to appropriate levels and classes according to their English ability, age and nationality
- Preparing a weekly timetable – who is teaching which groups and when
- Dealing with student and teacher problems relating to the EFL Programme
- Leading a daily teachers’ meeting and keeping the minutes (An Accreditation UK requirement). Leading or assisting with two input sessions (during the teachers’ meeting) per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
