Working Day:
The first duty of the day is to ensure that students are woken up and ready for breakfast. Following breakfast, there is a daily teachers’ meeting which all teaching staff must attend every day.
After the teachers’ meeting it is time for lessons. Depending on the centre, you will either teach 15 hours per week (Eastbourne and Vinehall) or 20 hours per week (Dicker and Lancing) spread over 5 mornings. There are 3 lessons per day at all centres. Eastbourne and Vinehall have one lesson of 1 ½ hours and then 2 x 45 minutes whereas Dicker and Lancing have two lessons of 1 ½ hours and then a 1 hour lesson. The first two lessons at each centre focus on communication and improving students’ fluency. The third lesson is a Project Lesson based around the weekly excursion. All of the lessons are based around a syllabus which is divided into weeks. Each week is based around a theme and we use the major EFL textbooks which are on the market at the moment e.g. Cutting Edge, Headway, Natural English and Clockwise.
Lesson planning takes place during the afternoon in one of the two slots – either while students are taking part in activities or during students’ free time. You will be preparing for the next day under the guidance of the Senior Teacher and Academic Manager. If you are not preparing, you will be assisting with the wide range of activities which are offered or you will be supervising students’ free time which may involve supervision of the computer suite or house supervision or other duties.
In the evenings, depending on the centre, from either 17.45 (Eastbourne and Vinehall) or 18.00 (Dicker and Lancing).
